Spatial patterns of snow distribution in the sub-Arctic

چکیده
Abstract. The spatial distribution of snow plays a vital role in sub-Arctic and Arctic climate, hydrology, ecology due to its fundamental influence on the water balance, thermal regimes, vegetation, carbon flux. However, is not well understood, therefore, it modeled, which can lead substantial uncertainties cover representations. To capture key hydro-ecological controls distribution, we carried out intensive field studies over multiple years for two small (2017–2019; ∼ 2.5 km2) study sites located Seward Peninsula Alaska. Using an suite observations (> 22 000 data points), developed simple models equivalent (SWE) using factors such as topographic characteristics, vegetation characteristics based greenness (normalized different index, NDVI), metric approximating winds. most successful model was random forest, both all years, able accurately complexity variability across sites. Approximately 86 % SWE could be accounted for, average, by forest at Factors that impacted year-to-year included NDVI, elevation, represent coarse microtopography (topographic position TPI), while slope, wind, fine were less important. characterization patterns will used validate improve modeling Department Energy's Earth system improved understanding topography, dynamics regions globe.

Shifting patterns of life in the Pacific Arctic and sub-Arctic seas.
Recent changes in the timing of sea ice formation and retreat, along with increasing seawater temperatures, are driving shifts in marine species composition that may signal marine ecosystem reorganization in the Pacific Arctic sector. Interannual variability in seasonal sea ice retreat in the northern Bering Sea has been observed over the past decade; north of the Bering Strait, the Chukchi Sea...
متن کاملSpatial Distribution of Methanesulphonic Acid in the Arctic Aerosol Collected during the Chinese Arctic Research Expedition
Methanesulphonic acid (MSA, mainly derived from marine biogenic emissions) has been frequently used to estimate the marine biogenic contribution. However, there are few reports on MSA over the Arctic Ocean, especially the central Arctic Ocean. Here, we analyzed MSA in aerosol samples collected over the ocean and seas during the Chinese Arctic Research Expedition (CHINARE 2012) using ion chromat...
متن کاملSpatial-temporal Patterns of Snow Cover in Western Canada
Snow cover is often measured as snow water equivalent (SWE), which refers to the amount of water stored in a snow-pack that would be available upon melting. Snow cover and SWE represent the source of local snow melt release, and are sensitive to regional and global atmospheric circulation, and changes in climate. Monitoring SWE using satellite-based passive microwave radiometry has provided nea...
متن کاملGIS-based analysis of spatial distribution patterns of growing degree-days for agricultural applications in Iran
The geographical distribution of growing degree-days (GDDs) within Iran was studied using GIS-based maps. GDDs were calculated using daily thermal parameters (daily maximum and minimum air temperature). Based on the purpose of the study and climatic conditions of Iran, the average value of 5?C was chosen for GDD calculation. The calculations were carried out using daily weather data of 113 mete...
